Tras 4 años de grabación por fin aparecerá Day of the Dead, un álbum tributo a Grateful Dead, producido por los integrantes de The National, Aaron y Brice Dessner, quienes reunieron a varios de sus artistas favoritos para reinterpretar las canciones de la agrupación norteamericana a su manera, bajo el sello discográfico 4AD.
Se trata de un disco de 59 pistas con casi seis horas de duración, y la participación de más de sesenta artistas. El álbum fue producido por Red Hot Organization con el fin de recaudar dinero para la lucha contra el VIH/Sida. Es la secuela de la compilación Dark Was the Night de 2009 que recaudó más de 1.5 millones de dólares para la misma causa.
El disco muestra el legado cultural y musical que la banda liderada por Jerry García ha dejado después de veinte años de su muerte. Dentro de la compilación, se esperan covers hechos por artistas como The National, The Flaming Lips, Courtney Barnett, The War On Drugs, Kurt Vile and J Mascis, TV on the Radio, Tunde Adebimpe, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, My Morning Jacket, Yo La Tengo, Ira Kaplan, Fucked Up, Arcade Fire, Richard Reed Parry, Garth Hudson, Caroline Shaw, entre otros.

Para los hermanos Dessner, Grateful Dead siempre ha sido una gran fuente de inspiración. Ambos recuerdan tocar “Eyes of the World” durante horas interminables en el ático de Bryan Devendorf, a los 14 años, quien después se convertiría en el baterista de the National.

Day of the Dead será lanzado este 20 de Mayo en formato digital, en una edición con 5 CD´s y una caja edición limitada en vinilo.
Previamente fue anunciado show en vivo de Day of the Dead que tomará lugar en Eaux Claires Festival este 12 y 13 de agosto con varios músicos que aparecen en el disco. En este disco podremos escuchar las canciones clásicas de the Grateful Dead de una manera totalmente nueva y muy al estilo del artista que la interpretó.
