Con una década acumulada, Groundation se ha convertido en una de las bandas contemporáneas más significativas que abordan los géneros de dub, funk, jazz, reggae y aterrizan los terrenos en los que se asociaría una vibración de ritmos latinos/africanos. En la actualidad está conformada por Harrison Stafford ( head del grupo junto con guitarra y vocales), Marcus Urani (teclado), Ryan Newman (bajo), David Chachere (trompeta), Te Kemawa Haereiti (bacteria), Mingo Lewis Jr. (percusiones) y Kim Pommell (coro).El origen de la banda comenzó cuando Harrison junto con Marcus y Ryan se conocieron en el programa de jazz de la Universidad de Sonoma State (California, E.U.A). Groundation cuenta con nueve álbumes (la mayoría han sido lanzados por la disquera Young Tree Records ubicada en California y que fue cofundada por Harrison) entre los cuales han colaborado grandes leyendas del sonido rastafari como Don Carlos y The Congos. El pasado tres de Noviembre visitaron la República Mexicana por primera vez y en Ibero 90.9 pudimos tener una entrevista telefónica con el “professor del reggae”, Harrison Stafford:
Beto Palacios – Hey man, how is it going? Harrison Stafford – Yeah everything is good the sun is shinning were just getting ourselves on the round, starting the road.
- ¿Qué onda, cómo te va? - Hey, todo bien. El sol está brillando y estamos apenas preparandonos para el camino, andamos empezando la gira.
AB- Do you have any special expectations regarding the tour here. HB – You know honestly I don’t have expectations. I’m looking forward to hanginh out in México City. México is such a huge area of people on top of each other. I’m anticipating that to be kind of breathtaking you know? To really see that landscape of México City, so I’m really looking forward to that. I know historically, there a richness of the history of the people of México, Mexico City in particular, so I’m looking forward to feel the energy. Because you know, as you travel around the world through Morocco, Israel and France and Brazil and Australia, you feel the energy of Sydney, Sao Paolo this places. So I’m really feeling there’s lots of special ingredients that are gonna make Mexico City a really unique and special experience.
- ¿Tienes algunas expectativas en especial sobre la gira de aquí? -Honestamente no tengo expectativas. Estoy añorando sólo convivir en la Ciudad de México. Es una ciudad enorme, una gran área de personas encimadas. Estoy anticipando que eso sea muy impresionante. Realmente ver el paisaje de la ciudad de México, estoy muy ansioso por eso. Yo sé que históricamente hay una riqueza en la historia de las personas de México, particularmente con la ciudad de México entonces, estoy entusiasmado de sentir la energía. Porque, a medida que vas viajando alrededor del mundo a través de Marruecos, Israel, Francia, Brasil y Australia; sientes la energía de Sídney, Sao Paolo y estos lugares. Por lo tanto, estoy realmente sintiendo que en la ciudad de México habrá una experiencia especial y única.
AB- Of course it will be man! I understand exactly what you’re saying. It will be pure bliss and nothing but overwhelming experiences I Hope. HS – Yeah, Yeah! I really feel that, because like I said, it’s rich. Rich with history. - ¡Claro que lo sera hermano! AB – So, how many members of the band are on the tour? HS – We are nine people on stage, Groundation is a nine piece band, touring around the world. - ¿Cúantos miemrbos de la banda están en la gira? - Somos nueve personas en el scenario, Groundation banda de nueve piezas, girando alrededor del mundo.
AB- Can you share with us the experience of collaborating with The Congas and Don Carlos? I assume it must be quite significant for the band as well as yourself. HS – Yeah man, Yeah! I mean through the years Groundation, we now have 9 albums the most recent one Building an Ark, which just came out a few months ago. Your speaking of Hebron Gate the album after that Wee Free Again with Don Carlos and Apple Gabriel. These are really the other, these are the foundation. Specifically Don Carlos, one of the most loving human being that will ever be on the planet. Don Carlos full of spirit of Jah, great joy and happiness follows Don Carlos. Cedric Myton the lead singer of The Congos, he is pure vibes, electric! He might be 70 years old but it feels like you are hanging with a 20 year old kid, its spirit its fire! They are two different people, but they show us there is a true commitment to this music. Groundation as a group we’ve been together 14 years , but this guys have been playing roots reggae music, conscious music for years. So it shows its about commitment its about a focus in life, something that your not gonna win the race the first time you run it, it’s a lifelong thing.
- ¿Podrías compartir con nosotros la experiencia de haber colaborado con The Congos y Don Carlos? Asumo que ha de ser bastante significante por tanto para la banda como para ti. - Sí hermano, sí! Alrededor de los años, ahora tenemos 9 álbumes y el más reciente es Building an Ark que salió hace unos meses. Tu estas hablando de Hebron Gate y el álbum que le siguió We Free Again con Don Carlos y Apple Gabriel. Ellos son realmente los otros, ellos son la fundación. Específicamente Don Darlos, el es uno de los seres humanos con más amor que habrá en el planeta. Don Carlos está lleno de espíritu de Jah, gran alegría y felicidad se deposita en el. Cedric Myton el vocalista principal de The Congos, el es vibra pura, eléctrica.
